Ava DuVernay and Autumn Riley

Ava DuVernay was born on August 24 1972 at Long Beach California. When she was a young girl, DuVernay's aunt Denise was a great influence on her enthusiasm for art and creativity. Aunt Denise worked during the night shifts as a nursing assistant to ensure she could pursue her love for theater and art during the day. DuVernay was captivated by the film of 1961 West Side Story after her aunt introduced her to DuVernay. DuVernay was instructed by her mom that the arts can serve as a tool for activism. DuVernay grew up with a mother who was socially conscious and taught her to use art as a method of expressing herself. DuVernay was a resident of Compton for most of her life, but was able to spend summers with her father's extended family in Lowndes County Alabama. Her father was awed by the Civil Rights movement's historic march over the Edmund Pettus Bridge, in neighboring Selma Alabama. DuVernay was strongly influenced by her summers in Selma to later direct the documentary of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. DuVernay finished Saint Joseph High School at Lakewood, California in 1990. DuVernay went to the University of California Los Angeles following her graduation, and earned diplomas in English and African American Studies. DuVernay began to develop an interest in journalistic broadcasting while in school. She began working as an intern at CBS News during the O.J. Simpson trial. DuVernay remembered being told to look at the trash of a jury member's home. The work she was assigned to did not leave her satisfied with journalism so she decided to shift her focus towards the industry of public relations. DuVernay found a job immediately from college, working as a new publicist at a studio. From this position she started her own PR company known as The DuVernay Agency in 1999. The agency was the first to launch a variety of promotions and lifestyle channels that include Urban Beauty Collective and Urban Eye.
